The Delaware Motorsports Complex is home to Delaware’s only dragstrip, the U.S. 13 Dragway. Regardless, this dragstrip has been around for 58 years and has even expanded their services to include a dirt racetrack. Here’s some more about U.S. 13 Dragway and some fun things to do.
US 13 Dragway is owned by the Cathell family, whose history begins in the year 1963. Bill Cathell saw a demand for drag racing (the sport was growing at the time) and also wanted to provide a safe place for his son and friends to race. The drag strip opened to a slow start, but business picked up thanks to the support of the Delmar drag club who helped operate the facility.
The dragstrip has since grown over the years to include a dirt track and even grandstands which are shared between both tracks. Although, there are some avid fans who still watch the drag races by backing up their vehicles to the fence to watch from their trunks, before the stands were built. The drag strip is so popular it was also named the 8th most popular attraction in Delaware by the Delaware Tourism Bureau.
Their season opener, the IHRA Summit Super Series is on April 4, along with several other exciting events lined up for the rest of the year. All events can be found on their website at www.delawareracing.com, including those for the dirt track.
