The BTE Drag Strip series is back! Today we make a pit stop in California, home to the oldest operating NHRA drag strip in the country. We’ve highlighted four, top-rated tracks, listed below.
Auto Club Raceway at Pomona- Pomona, California
Auto Club Raceway at Pomona, (a.k.a Pomona Raceway and The Fairplex) has been a racing facility since 1961 and features a 1/4 mile drag strip. The facility is one of the few drag strips in the country to be operated directly by the NHRA. Additionally, since 1984, Pomona Raceway has been the host of the season's last race, the NHRA Finals.
Sacramento Raceway Park- Sacramento, California
Celebrating their 50-year anniversary, the family-owned Sacramento Raceway Park continues to provide an exciting and safe drag-racing environment. This drag strip hosts a variety of events including drag racing, car shows, and motocross racing.
Sonoma Raceway- Sonoma County, California
Sonoma Raceway is a 1,600-acre facility with a 2.52-mile 12-turn road course as well as a ¼ mile drag strip. This motorsports complex holds two of the top racing series in the country—The Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series and NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series. Sonoma Raceway also owns a professional kart center and motorsports industrial park. However, at the moment due to COVID-19, several events have been canceled or postponed to later in the summer.
Redding Dragstrip- Redding, California
In 1948, the abandoned runways at Redding Airport became Redding Dragstrip. This drag strip became an officially sanctioned NHRA track back in the 1950s, making it the oldest operating NHRA drag racing facility in the country. As a Division 7 NHRA drag racing facility, Redding Dragstrip racers also participate in a wide variety of NHRA programs including the NHRA ET Challenge, and the NHRA Summit Racing Series, which includes Jr. Dragsters.
