Car of the Week: Rickie Sampey's 1974 Chevy Vega

Welcome to the BTE Racing Car of the Week series, where we feature our customers and fans, and the cars (and trucks) they love to race. Today, it’s all about Rickie Sampey and his '74 Chevy Vega from Luling, Louisiana

How did you get into drag racing?

Drag racing has been in my family for as long as I can remember. My dad was drag racing motorcycles when I was born. My sister is a three-time NHRA Pro Stock Motorcycle World champion. I had been down the 1/4 mile a few times on a motorcycle and have been crew chiefing my two sons in Jr Dragsters for the past 5 years. The Vega is my first race car.

When and where was your first race?

My first race was 32 years ago, I was 18 and ran my Uncle Chris Dufrene's drag bike at Gulfport Dragway. I was runner up that day. My first race in the Vega was just a few weeks ago, also at Gulfport Dragway.

What model/year do you race now?

I race a 1974 tube chassis, steel body Chevy Vega.

Does your car have a nickname?

My Vega does not have a nickname, yet, although Monte Caldarelli calls it the "Lil Red Vega."

What's under the hood?

Phil’s Performance 383 SBC

What is your pre-race ritual (if you have one)?

I haven't developed a pre-race ritual yet, but I do concentrate on keeping my heat beat at a resting rate throughout my run.  #fitbit
