Welcome to the BTE Racing Car of the Week series, where we feature our customers and fans, and the cars (and trucks) they love to race. Today, it’s all about Jerry Spearn of Misbehavin Motorsports and his 1962 Volkswagen Karmann Ghia from Phoenix, AZ.

How did you get into drag racing?

I was exposed to hot rods at a very early age. (My uncle built a ’57 Chevy street rod when I was 10.) During high school, I took auto shop and built a very fast VW. 

When and where was your first race?

I started street racing in 1981.

What model/year do you race now?

1962 Volkswagen Karmann Ghia

Does your car have a nickname?

GhiaMonster

What's under the hood?

2332cc turbo charged type 1 VW motor (142 CI making 612 crankshaft HP), best ET to date is 9.20 @ 152mph

Cory McClenathan

If money were no object, what would you drive?

A ProMod VW, or an X275 car

What is your pre-race ritual (if you have one)?

I always kiss my wife before rolling out of the staging lanes.
