BTE Racing Car of the Week: 1996 Mustang

Car of the Week: Derek Pearson's 1996 Mustang

Welcome to the BTE Racing Car of the Week series, where we feature our customers and drag racing fans, and the cars (and trucks) they love to race. Today we're featuring Derek Pearson from West Frankfort, IL, who owns and races a 1996 Mustang.

How did you get into drag racing?
My parents own a skating rink that is a mile from the drag strip and when I was younger I would always hear the cars racing on Friday and Saturday nights and wanted to go but couldn’t because I had to stay and help. Finally, when I was 15 I talked my dad into stopping by the track. He ran his car down the strip one time and then let me try—we were hooked and have been racing since then.

Where was your first drag race?
I-57 dragstrip in Benton, IL

What model/year do you race now?
1996 Mustang

Does your car have a nickname?
No.

What's under the hood?
440sbc

Which BTE Racing products do you use in your vehicle?
BTE 5500 converter

Why do you use BTE?
I think the question here is why wouldn’t you use BTE—it’s the best around and I would never run anything else.

Do you have any stories about how BTE helped you improve your racing?
Once I bought the new converter from BTE, my car instantly picked up and was more consistent than it ever before.

A drag racer you look up to?
I would have to say I look up to my group of buddies that I race with… if it wasn’t for them I wouldn’t be where I am today.

If money were no object, what would you drive?
Wouldn’t change from what I have.

What is your pre-race ritual (if you have one)?
Listen to “Keep Pushing” by T-Ferg ft Meech New Era
